Project

Habbi Habbi is a bilingual children’s book company; their entire book collection is compatible with a reading wand, which reads the text and all the objects on the page in both English and Chinese/Spanish. They asked me to design the characters for their storybook series, Haddie & Lulu.

For each book, I was provided the text and given the freedom to explore

In total, I designed 8 books (four books in two language variations), each with seven color spreads of fun and interactive illustrations.

Concept & Process

For each book, I created rough storyboards based on the written text that was provided to me. This thumbnail view allowed me to consider color in a holistic way and make sure there was enough variety in the different compositions throughout the book. For The Color Conundrum, I wanted to make sure that the overall color palette felt cohesive even through each spread would be representing a different color of the rainbow. I threaded complementary colors through each spread to tie them together.

Another important consideration at this stage was making sure that each spread had it’s own story and that the characters were doing something different in each one. I wanted each spread to feel like a treasure hunt for the reader– looking for all the different items they could recognize.

Final Design

Each illustration was created to feel unique from the other spreads, while maintaining a consistent style across all the books. The main characters, Haddie & Lulu are shown in different playful situations to make the stories fun and engaging for young readers.
